Hi,
I am organising a Staff development 'long morning' on 'tackling racism' for
all staff at the School of Education (with invitations ot staff in other
departments who share a campus with us).
The event will focus primarily on the quality of the student experience
I am looking for someone, PREFERABLY SOMEONE WHO WORKS/HAS WORKED IN THE
TECHNICAL, CLERICAL OR DOMESTIC BRANCHES OF AN HEI, to
a. make a very brief presentation (literally 5 minutes) which relates the
'tackling racism' theme to the the work and/or experiences of technical or
clerical or domestic staff [e.g an example of a technical / secretarial /
domestic initiative to counter racism]
b. lead a workshop for 75 minutes or so on 'equality assurance' / 'tackling
racism' in the the wider student experience (administrative, domestic and
social provision and experience); the workshop will be open to staff from
all walks of University life, but will probabaly be attended mostly by
staff who work in the above areas.
It would be good if this person themselves came from a Black/minority
ethnic background: the vast vast majority of our staff are white, English,
and it would do us good to 'hear it' from Black colleagues.
Can you suggest anyone, or anywhere I might find such a person (e.g. a
particular trade union contact that you have found useful).
background:
The 5 minute presentation will be one of 5 short cameos giving individual,
personal reactions based on research literature or professional practice;
the other 4 will be
rural racism
minority ethnic student practitioners (teaching/social work/probation work)
ethnicity and mature students in H.E.
ethnicity and Sports Jo
The other Workshops under the heading "the student experience" will be
· learning on Campus
· learning off Campus (e.g. placements)
the whole morning will be opened up by a keynote working along these
guidelines:
· to be inspirational/ motivating;
· to convey the message that tangible, achievable actions can make a
difference (i.e to give some examples of solutions as well as problems)
· to give information about the external contexts (e.g. the implications
for Higher Education of the revision of the Race Relations Act)
· to address our Rural/White Highlands context (e.g. racism is not just an
urban issue)
thanks, In hopeful anticipation!
