Betty Johnston of University Technology Sydney did her PhD (University of Sydney PhD) on this. She is now retired, but Keiko Yasukawa who also works on Adult Numeracy isn't and if you want references to Betty's work you could contact Keiko either by googling or searching the UTS website. But yes, definitely something worth looking at further.
Best wishes,
Mike

Subject: Re: Action on Maths
I would be interested in hearing if anybody is up to speed with "maths anxiety". This condition may have died the death, but was noticed and researched in the 70s and 80s. It has always seemed to me that a much commoner condition could be "literacy anxiety" which is everywhere observable, IMO, but never remarked upon, never mind researched. Will someone please do their PhD on this overwhelmingly important but totally unobserved issue! (I am far too old.)

Dear colleagues
A new Action on Adult Maths initiative, driven by NIACE and partners including unionlearn, the NRDC, UKonline and the BBC is being launched. From now until the end of March, a partnership of national organisations will support a wide range of activities to raise awareness of the importance of maths. This includes:
· developing and promoting maths apps for adults;
· training up 8,000 Maths Champions;
· coordinating an online numeracy assessment tool;
· developing a series of MOOCs (massive open online courses);
· improving the quality of teaching and learning; and
· enthusing people about the enjoyment and importance of maths.
If you are doing ESOL and Maths, we’d love to hear from you. Do please get in touch
Best wishes
