Hello Je Kan and All,
I had initial problems accessing your video, which is partly why I haven't responded. I finally
managed last night after submitting our BERA 07 keynote proposal on Using Multi Media to
Promote Educational Research and Practice, by the midnight deadline. I am no longer part of the
Bath University Practitioner Group though I do post frequently to this list and share a passion with
many here for using multi media. I found your video very moving. Marian's recall of the way you
invited us to engage with your practice helped me reflect on why it has moved me, during today.
There was something of a primordial fascination in assisting in sustaining a 'measured' fire and
the prayers you intoned as I listened and watched resonated with my experience of participating in
many Christian prayer meetings where we meditated together and gazed into a flickering flame.
You evoked a time when I first began to understand that faith (at least for me) is a tuning in to the
good that exists between and around us. I particularly appreciated the way the parents held their
children close and helped to keep the fire burning (in your video) and the moments when one little
child was getting too warm - that encapsulated for me how as educators we need to be alert to
others at every moment we interact with them and not be blinded or deaf to the needs of those
who are more vulnerable than we are. Your video resonated with my memories of when you and I
discussed our values in mentoring as we prepared to co-present to nurses, nurse educators and
doctors in Kobe. As I watched, I felt that I could understand more about who you are 'in practice'.
I felt a strong empathy with what I experienced in your video though I have to say I did find some
of the sections a little too long and suggest some editing. Hopefully that wouldn't be sacriledge?
Warm regards,
Sarah
