I must say I agree with those who would like to see discussions about all aspects of ESOL, including funding issues, stay on this list. We already have a proliferation of information sources and streams (NATECLA, NIACE, Action for ESOL, UCU etc etc) and this list serves as a useful place where everything is eventually collated. I am of course putting my oar in where it is not wanted, not being an ESOL manager or teacher (at the moment) but as Mary H suggests, research is also about policy and funding - in fact I would say that the divisions between research, policy and teaching are false and it is helpful for all of us to know what is going on. And as people have said, we must all be very skilled at scanning and deleting by now...

I agree with Martin and Mary. My research is in the area of policy, practice and change and I would miss the managers' discussions if they were separated off.

I agree with Martin. I will sign up to a managers' list if a separate one is established but I think there is a lot of benefit in keeping all the discussion under one umbrella. We already sift through the emails and select which items to read in more depth and which to leave. I think it would be very hard, artificial and possibly counter-productive to try and separate policy and practice.

Hi Gail,
It seems as if managers want their own list, but I'd like to add/ask that ESOL researchers and teachers should also have access to it please!!! I'd also like to argue against such a list - although of course its your right etc to have one!
You mention that ESOL researchers may not be interested in 'excluding unemployed learners" (from a statistical/administrative list ? ) but personally as an ESOL researcher as soon as I read this sentence my virtual 'ears' pricked up. My area of research revolves around policy and practice and the complex of relationships between implementing, teaching and learning that are involved in ESOL and I wanted to know what you were talking about an d how it might impact my own research and my co-participants in our classes. So ESOL managers are essential to me ! and as much a part of the provision as any one else. I would argue we are inextricably intertwined, already at risk (from Government) of re-fragmentation ( I think James called it fragmentation in London last year, after reading 'A Critical History of ESOL' and other research I have come to think of it as "re-fragmentation").
The number of times I have picked up a piece of information from ESOL-RESEARCH from a discussion that was perhaps not directly concerning my own research or practice is uncountable. For me, the sheer volume and scope of experience and perspective on ESOL research are what make it so valuable. And yes, at times its a bit 'messy' because of the scope and volume of information available through ESOL research trying to negotiate the threads or backtrack on something you have read only to cross reference it to something else, but then ESOL, and life is a bit messy! SO managers, I appeal to you, dont leave us this way! We might survive, we might stay alive, but without your input, my own research would be so much weaker! (Sorry couldnt make it rhyme)
