Dear All,
Maybe we should celebrate the fact that so many people make the
effort to contribute to discussions on this forum. We all obviously
feel passionate about our work and our students. This inevitably means
that we will feel strongly about issues, from the Government and anyone
else who makes decisions, that affect the people we teach, and
therefore our work.

Best Wishes,

Karina

keep us up to date with relevant information, to enable us to share and
diseminate good practice and ideas and to discuss pertinent issues. (
as opposed to simply research issues)For those who wish to rage
actively against the machine I suggest letters to MPs, newspapers, Home
Office and positive support for Action for ESOL and NATECLA to raise
and challenge issues which affect ESOL.It is clear that there are very
strong feelings out there - let's ensure that we work together to
ensure that the focus is on the needs of ESOL learners.

> When I joined this list it was an ESOL Research list; many
posts these days increasingly appear to be anti-govt rants (which
started while Labour were in power, but have increased in number since
the Coalition appeared). Poor Sheila asked a reasonable question and
got a barrage in response. I’m with Hugo at being astonished at being
accused of being complicit in government organised ignorance and
hatred, and justifying it all by saying our history is at fault. Can we
please get this list back to its original purpose. There are doubtless
other forums, inc. Facebook, for people who want to rage against the
machine. B. Barbara Spence

>Subject: Re: news headlines To be absolutely honest I am disgusted and
enraged to be told I have "given in to Home Office fear, ignorance and
hatred". My post merely stated some facts. I am aware that our history
was frequently indefensible - like all others' actually - And of course
that gives additional moral twists to what is a complicated issue or
set of issues. It does not provide carte blanche for any opinion, or
justification for disregarding facts. To deal with fear - given the
multitudinal problems facing the world today any grandfather (I am one)
who does not experience some fear needs to take a better newspaper.
Ignorance: where is your evidence of mine? Hatred: I expect an apology
for that one.

think if we view diversity as precious and worth cherishing then giving
into Home Office fear hatred and ignorance will not help. If we don't
think our country can support many more people then we need to withdraw
our tacit support for economic, military and political policies
grounded in a we have three planets worth of resources perspective, and
founded on the notion that any resources in other countries really
belong to us. If we look at the people who are fleeing to our country a
cursory examination of our bloody history will reveal the part we have
played and still play in other people's suffering. William Gladstone,
MP and later Prime Minister, recorded in his diary that he was “in

towards China.” http://www.gentleapocalypse.com/2010/05/british-empire-israel.html

>Subject: Re: news headlines I think it is hear, hear. And I agree,
except that the UK is already very densely populated so in numerical
terms we may have a problem, especially once climate change begins to
drive population movements. We should be thinking, kindly but
rationally, about this issue. Racism is alive and well, if a little
dormant after years of what we thought were Good Times. We want nothing
to do with it, or it's language, which can seem reasonable but hides
malignancy. But globally there really is a problem, and it is growing
and being faced with unprecedented environmental difficulties. (what
happens when the rainy/dry season cycle really does founder across the
middle belt of our planet? What happens when the water dries up
underneath cities? When people find we, or the Chinese, or the
Brazilians, have bought the rights to their land?) We can fully agree
with Dr Monaghan while recognising there is still a mathematical and
political issue.
