Symposium: Latin American Migration in London . 20 January

This interdisciplinary symposium will provide an opportunity to present and discuss new studies of the conditions of the Latin American migrant communities in London. The symposium introduces recent academic research projects on the topic and the cultural experience of Latin Americans living in the capital. The panels will be composed of academics and leading London-based Latin Americans from the media and art sectors. While focusing on the Latin American communities in London, this symposium will draw on fields such as migration and transnationalism, geography, history, cultural, communication and media studies.

The increase in Latin American migration to the UK has given rise to a significant upsurge of Latin American cultural events produced mainly in London. In 1999, for instance only one Latin American film festival was organised, in 2007 there were five and by 2009 the number increased to eight. London hosts a Latin American music festival since 2001 and a Latin American theatre festival since 2007. Furthermore, since 1999 the capital hosts the largest Latin American outdoor festival in Europe, Carnaval del Pueblo. Also, in May 2004 a Brazilian carnival took over the West End of Oxford Street; this event was sponsored by Selfridges, one of the largest department stores in London; and in 2010 Brazilian art was again showcased in the Southbank Centre.

Given the significant and escalating presence of Latin American culture in the streets of London, this session seeks to enquire into the cultural impact of the Latin American cultural events in the English capital. Questions such as to what extent these cultural events are facilitating community participation and cultural exchange between the Latin American communities and Britain and how these activities are constructing, representing and increasing the Latin American visibility in London, will be addressed.

At the same time, this interdisciplinary session will explore how the media operates as a vehicle for contemporary modes of ethnic and cultural representation and self-representation. The aim of this session is to offer a platform to discuss the impact of the Latin American media operating in London as well as the local media in the representations of Latin American culture in the capital.
