Nottingham Action for ESOL Rally
See pictures on Nottingham indymedia: http://nottingham.indymedia.org.uk/articles/1074
Around 200 students, ex students, ESOL teachers and supporters turned out to join our Save ESOL rally in Nottingham market Square yesterday [24th March]. We kicked off with chants of STOP CUT ESOL CLASS led by Sayed [pic 2], an Iranian activist who currently works with Nottingham Refugee Forum. 12 or so people spoke, including current and former students and teachers. Some of these were prepared pieces, but most were impromptu. ESOL students talked about the effects the cuts would have on their language learning and about the importance of language for everyday life, getting decent work and so on. Jasim, an Iraqi-Kurdish activist and an ex-ESOL student who also works at the Forum talked about the links between this struggle and those elsewhere - against the cuts and for democratic rights in the middle east. The atmosphere was celebratory and really brought home the commitment of students and teachers to language education, and how vital it is that we help create a public space in which the voices of English language students can be heard. I was moved by Pauline, an adult lit. student at castle College (who had joined the UCU picket line that morning [standing behind Jasim pic 4 from the bottom]) who took the mike to talk about her own struggles learning to read and write, making links between this and language classes for non-native speakers. This is the kind of solidarity we need. All in all hugely reaffirming and something to build on.

Dear Ms Arnold,Thank you for your e-mail of 11 March to John Hayes, about English forSpeakers of Other Languages (ESOL). As I am sure you will appreciatethe Minister receives a large amount of correspondence and is unable torespond to it all in person therefore on this occasion I have been askedto reply. The Government fully appreciates that English language skills areimportant in integrating into society and in finding and holding ontoemployment. In the current economic climate difficult decisions have had to be made. This includes prioritising Government investment in training forunemployed people actively seeking work. This means that full fundingfor ESOL will be provided for adults in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowanceor in the Employment and Support Allowance Work-Related Activity Group, where English language skills are identified as a barrier to enteringemployment. Outside of this, the Government will continue to fund 50%of the costs of ESOL training, with individuals expected to meet theremainder of the costs. However, we expect those who come to thiscountry to work, or their employers, to pay the full cost of languagecourses and so will not fund ESOL in the workplace. Yours sincerelySimon KingBIS MINISTERIAL CORRESPONDENCE UNIT
