Subject: Qualitative analysis of EFL classroom interaction.
Whilst NVivo is a powerful tool for audio/visual analysis, it is expensive and with a learning curve. An alternative is Transana, simpler and cheaper but not as sophisticated - <http://www.transana.org>. A couple of us at Leeds have been using this for multimodal analysis of videoed interaction.
Given the type of data being collected, I'd say of more importance than the QDA software is your analytical approach to analysing video data of classroom interaction. For current literature and methodological frameworks:
Charles Goodwin is good: <http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/clic/cgoodwin/projects.htm>
Sigrid Norris also: <http://www.sigridnorris.com/>

Dear Colleagues,
As we are soon going to be heavily involved in research, monitoring and evaluation activities of the English in Action project in Bangladesh ( http://www.eiabd.com/eia/ ), a project funded by DFID UK, we will be collecting the classroom activities data through observation and videoing. This means there will be a massive amount of data to be analysed. For this analysis we plan to use the software called NVivo. We are wondering if anyone has used this software for this kind of analysis. We would like to hear from the colleagues who have. Any pointers in terms of the published literature review regarding classroom interaction would also be very much appreciated.
Any colleagues who have the information, could you please email me at [log in to unmask] so that we don't clog up everyone's mailbox?
Many thanks in advance!
Best wishes,
Prithvi
