Dear Sarah,
"hope and expectation"
In the difference between these words might lie the source of your
difficulties.
Meanwhile, when 'context is all', as is the recognition that lies behind the
work of many people on this list, there is simply no way that "what has
occurred in the past (real or imagined) that has set relationships apart"
can simply be set aside. Once trust has been broken, and protective
instincts aroused, for whatever reason, it can take an awful lot of work to
restore. This doesn't mean that there is no hope of reconciliation. But it
does mean that feelings of expectation and indignation are unlikely to relax
the resistances that have been hardened through harsh experience, and need
to be softened through the growth of mutual understanding, not unilateral
declarations of intent.
Warmest
Alan

Subject: Re: AA Thread 2 07-08 How do i~we explain our educational
influences in learning to improve our educational influences as
practitioner-researchers within the social and other formations that
dynamically include us?
Dear All
I've read the messages in response to Jack's question with appreciation for
their eloquence and especially Marie's sensitive and empathetic summary of
some of the posting contents.
Then I reflected on how we, the contributors to this list, might
appreciatively engage in the name of BERA to further understandings and
strengthen educational relationships of the i~we kind. One way is to invite
collaboration - to share ideas in a way that crosses any boundaries rather
than reinforcing them. What if someone posted to this BERA Practitioner list
and s/he asked about a joint event where i~we practitioners could learn
alongside one another in appreciation? Would that person be greeted warmly?
Would they be valued?
All that it takes for evil to prosper is for good wo/men to do nothing...
all it takes is for those who are fellow members of the BERA Practitioner
SIG to stand by and watch silently.
I will repeat my invitations offered openly and in the hope and expectation
that no matter what has occurred in the past (real or imagined) that has set
relationships apart there can be ubuntu - there can be improvement in
practice, there can be reconciliation. All else is but eloquent rhetoric.
Now - would anyone like to respond to my invitations to organise a joint
event? Would anyone like to share ideas about web-based technology in
enabling practitioner research, which is my passionate focus? I hope so - in
the name of BERA...
Warm regards,
Sarah
