Not quite 'ESOL and Drama' but I had to share this recording of one student
singing the conjugation of the verb to be today in class (present tense, and
with her permission of course).

Information below for any interested ESOL practitioner who would like to be
involved in a one day workshop exploring how participatory drama and theatre
techniques can be adapted for use in an ESOL context. Please circulate to
anyone who might be interested.
This workshop is attached to a research pilot project the international
development agency Actionaid is running with ESOL providers in three Further
Education colleges. The project called Reflect for ESOL is experimenting
with participatory methods to learning based around the philosophy of Paulo
Freire.
The workshop will be held at Actionaid head office in Archway North London
on Friday 18th July 10 am– 4pm. The workshop is free and lunch is provided.
In special circumstances we might be able to reimburse travel expenses. We
would especially like to hear from practitioners who would be willing to
contribute practical suggestions on how the participatory drama activities
can be turned into ESOL language learning. For further information please
see below.

Turning Drama into Learning.
The ‘Reflect for ESOL’ Actionaid project is holding a workshop exploring and
experimenting with theatre techniques for participatory learning and social
change within an ESOL context.
The workshop has two aims:
1. To introduce the use of theatre as a participatory method for
learning.
2. To discuss and document ways in which participatory theatre
techniques can be used to develop language for ESOL learners within a UK
ESOL context.
In the workshop we will use techniques including image theatre, forum
theatre, and a range of other theatre exercises to explore (by doing), how
to create a more student-centred approach to learning in the classroom.
These methods have been used to help participants explore, reflect and
analyse different concerns, issues, attitudes which affect them. They have
also been used in classrooms geared around theme/issue based curriculum
development.
Ananda Breed will be the facilitator of the workshop, a Senior Lecturer of
Theatre Studies (Intl) at the University of East London.
Tish Taylor will facilitate the discussion around how the techniques can be
used for language learning. Tish is currently coordinating the Reflect ESOL
project at Actionaid and has an ESOL background.
