Frequently Asked Questions: the Great British Job Interview
Melanie Cooke
King's College, London
*****
This workshop will present a new DVD produced by researchers at King's
College London. The DVD evolved from a research project, Talk on Trial:
Job Interviews, Language and Ethnicity (Roberts and Campbell 2006)*
which analysed the linguistic processes of real interviews in
organisations such as factories and mail companies. The research found
that compared to UK born candidates, those born abroad faced a
'linguistic penalty' produced by the largely hidden demands to talk in
institutionally credible ways and from a mismatch of implicit cultural
expectations.
The report led to the production of two DVDs which take the findings out
to the wider community: the first, Successful at Selection (DWP) is
intended to raise awareness for interviewers who regularly interview
candidates who were born abroad. The second, Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQs) (funded by Jobcentre Plus Leicestershire/Northamptonshire
District with Deprived Area Fund (DAF) Provision) is for candidates
themselves, and those who teach them in colleges or training
organisations.
In this workshop I will show extracts from Frequently Asked Questions
and discuss ways it can be used in classrooms by ESOL or vocational
teachers and trainers working with multilingual students needing to
prepare for job interviews.

The ESOL Research Group is open to anyone with an interest in research
into ESOL in the Skills for Life context in the UK, and who is within
striking distance of the University of Leeds. This includes - but is not
limited to - current students, ESOL researchers, practitioners currently
carrying out research, practitioners who are planning to carry out
research, and those who have been involved in previous ESOL research.
How to get to the university:

How to get to Hillary Place: Hillary Place is close to the Parkinson
Building (with the white clock tower). As you face the Parkinson steps,
it is down the hill to your left, and on the left, opposite the old
church. Hillary Place is a row of red-brick terraced houses.
