You might be interested in two books dealing with ESOL. First, Helen
Sunderland and Marina Spiegel's book on teaching ESOL and literacy.

I see Spiegel and Sunderland’s book on teaching literacy to ESOL students
as fulfilling a massive need in ESOL. Many ESOL learners are acquiring
literacy for the first time, as adults, and in a new langauge. The problems
they face are enormous, as are those faced by their teachers.
The second is Kathy Pitt’s book:
Pitt, K. (2005) Debates in ESOL teaching and learning: Culture, communities
and learning. Abingdon: Routledge (New approaches to adult language,
literacy and numeracy series).
This is a book for practitioners about theory and research associated with
adult ESOL. There are five chapters, on language learning, changing
definitions of the good language learner, multilingualism, learning the
written langauge and learning the spoken language. Each chapter contains a
number of readings, extracts from key literature, and relates them to adult
ESOL in the UK.
