Hi Hannah

I can let you have a copy of a CD which has revised audios and resources.

It's good to know that it is still in use after all these years!

Hello ESOL teachers and lecturers

At our college we have a few worksheets from the excellent Listening for Beginners book which was made by the team at The Parade, Cardiff. I'm guessing this was in the early 2000s.

Does anyone happen to have the audio which goes with it? I think we used to have the tape but it has gone by the wayside some time back....

Many thanks in advance for rootling through your files if you think you might have it.

Subject: Workshop on multilingual/migrant pupils, York St John, 30 January from 5pm

Dear all,

I’ve just moved to York St John and we’re organising a workshop with Jean Conteh on multilingual / migrant students in UK schools - next Monday (30 Jan). It might be of interest to members of this group a there's a lot of common ground to explore between ESOL and EAL.

It’s the first part of an effort to build networks among teachers, academics and third-sector partners working with these young people. We’re starting at 5pm with a reception (and wine!) so people have a chance to connect with others working in similar areas, followed by Jean’s talk from 6pm.

All are welcome, and I'd be grateful if you could share the invitation with any others who might be interested. It's completely free and should be great fun!

Subject: Teachers addressing multilingual reality in their classrooms?

The video shows business people with a financial incentive which made me think that 'classroom learner needs' have been defined and resourced from a very different perspective, the dominant one, on the whole, in relation to

teaching about food, for instance. Understanding is very important, but I

think my role is introduce, monitor and develop language, too. I am interested in keeping it real, ELF and multi-languaging although, I also have a curriculum/scheme of work to address and the students should achieve their qualifications.

When they get the chance, compliments and slurs are being exchanged/taught in one group of young students' home language to a lad who has no compatriot, but the ability to interact with others. The dynamics and noise

are issues in this verbal rough play and good humour. I suppose it is how

and when to direct/control/stifle the multi-language use but more about how to identify its purposes. I use my interpretation to intervene. What does the other large, language group in the class make of it; they may enjoy the humour and competition, but on the whole, I don't think they, nor the other mixed language students appreciate much of it. I like that similarly to the traders, it shows a desire to learn from each other; something we can use in classrooms. Some market folk are adapting their ways and language or building up their businesses. The young students are negotiating their standing in their classroom. In an adult classroom, home languages are used mainly to support others until it becomes exclusive chat.

I think one opportunity is for us to develop a sense of when multi-languaging enhances learning and when it is exclusive or unkind. We can use our knowledge of other languages to explain or compare.

Keynote speakers include Mike McCarthy, Emeritus Professor, University of Nottingham; Professor Roger Nunn, The Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi; Professor Alan Maley, The C Group and Ivor Timmis, Reader in ELT, Leeds Beckett University.

English Scholars Beyond Borders (ESBB) is a non-profit circle of international academics. The aim of ESBB conferences is to assemble English teachers and scholars from across the globe to expand conceptual horizons. The conference will explore the diverse borders and boundaries that English teachers and scholars must negotiate to achieve success and to benefit learners.

ESBB acknowledges the ‘multicentricity’ of English scholarship and welcomes scholars from all locations. While the conference theme is English Beyond Borders, ESBB conferences embrace the local and the global. We are keen to hear from presenters wishing to discuss a very local issue. ESBB is very supportive of graduate students attending and presenting.

We invite papers on the following themes:

• English for research publication purposes • Studies which critically investigate academic publishing from the perspectives of authors, reviewers/editors, and Open Access; • Multilingual scholars in study and publication • Non-blind dialogic review • Multi/bilingual issues in language learning and linguistics • EAP/ESP across borders • English literature across borders • CLIL (Content and Language Integrated learning)/EMI (English Medium Instruction) • Study abroad and International exchange • Interdisciplinary issues in TESOL • Encouraging (cultural) diversity in voice and agency • New directions in critical thinking and reasoning • Using technology to cross borders • Role of corpora in language teaching and research • Migrants and refugees in language learning Proposals are invited on any aspect of the above themes. English will be the working language of the conference. Proposals should include a brief biodata, a 30-50 word abstract and a one page summary of approximately 300 words.

Submit your proposal →<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

The deadline for submission of proposals is 1 February 2017.

The registration fee is £195 per delegate and includes the conference pack, refreshments, lunch and inclusion of your paper in the seminar proceedings, if accepted for publication. Registration fee for students is £145 per delegate.

Subject: Re: 2017 e-seminar: ‘Translanguaging, superdiversity and ESOL’

Dear all

A couple of follow-ups about the start of the TLang e-seminar:

1. It’s great to see how engaged people are with the seminar, straight away. Since I posted the original message less than four hours ago, the website with the materials has been viewed over 150 times, from around the world. When the discussion begins, your contributions will have quite an audience!

2. Can you please hold off from making your contribution until 31 January? This gives people plenty of time to look at the materials and think about a response. Our discussants will say their piece on 30 Jan (next Monday) and then it’s open to all comers from the 31st, through until 10 Feb. A reminder too to make your comment here on ESOL-Research rather than on the website itself.

3. If email traffic becomes overwhelming during the seminar, it’s easy to change your subscription settings to ‘digest’. This means that you will receive all the day’s messages in just one email. To change your subscription settings go to www.jiscmail.ac.uk/ESOL-Research<http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/ESOL-Research>, click on ‘subscribe/unsubscribe’ and choose ‘digest’.

4. The seminar has already brought many new people to ESOL-Research, who are of course very welcome. For the first time in the ten years since it began, the forum has over 1000 subscribers.

5. If you need to contact me directly, you can do so at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or by clicking ‘email list owner’ on the list homepage, www.jiscmail.ac.uk/ESOL-Research<http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/ESOL-Research>

Thanks again everyone, and I look forward to next week’s discussion very much.

Best wishes

James
