Hi Michelle
We used to have separate FS maths classes for ESOL students so all levels from E1 up could attend. Now, the college only offers FS Maths at E3 and above for adults (unless part of another programme), with nothing separate for ESOL students and so the tutors want the learners to be at least E3 ESOL. We were very disappointed when the maths provision was reduced for adults - and so were the students..

Subject: ESOL Learners and Functional Skills Maths
Hi everyone
Could I ask any tutors working in Adult learning, about whether ESOL learners in their colleges are allowed to join Functional Skills Maths Courses.
My college has taken the decision to refuse all ESOL learners hoping to join a class if they have not achieved Level 2 in ESOL.
Previously the cut off for entry was E3 ESOL.
This seems to go against any idea of inclusivity. I have argued that many ESOL learners would be better off trying for the GCSE initial Maths assessment as the functional skills Maths is so wordy. However, again they would be excluded without Level 2
Any contributions would be great. I am hoping to provide some evidence that this practice is not normal around the country.
Many thanks
