On a slightly different note, I wonder if this is a good moment for ESOL people to write to their MPs about asylum seekers having to pay fees. The public mood has softened somewhat in the wake of recent events and it might be a good moment to lobby on behalf of asylum seekers?

I absolutely agree that ESOL classes should be delivered by qualified teachers and I am appalled at the low wages on offer for ESOL teachers in my local area (£16,000 - £18,000 p.a. is not at all unusual here for training providers). However, the fact remains that we are having to turn away many many learners this year. Most of them are newly-arrived asylum seekers or asylum seekers who cannot afford to pay for classes. Unfortunately, the only opportunities on offer for these learners are through volunteer-led provision.
I appreciate the hard work and commitment shown by all volunteers, whether or not they are qualified. They are playing a vital role for some of the most vulnerable people in society. The ESOL lessons may not be 'perfect', but the care and compassion the ESOL learners receive is invaluable, especially when they are new to the country.
I take my hat off to all volunteers who give up their valuable time to help others.
