Dear all,
I attended the Queering ESOL Conference at King's College London this weekend.
The themed covered LGBTIQ representation in media, literature and pedagogical materials. It was a well organised, highly intellectually stimulating conference.
I was particularly moved by the film 'intersection' which tells the story of intersex people (previously known as hermaphrodites). http://www.intersexionfilm.com/about-2/
I was even more surprised to hear that intersex people are as common as people with ginger hair.
I knew of intersex people but had honestly thought that they were a rarity.
The relevance and implications for ESOL teachers could be to teach students the range of gender identity we have and be accepting of these differences, might make this a real challenge when we live in a society that only records / views as 'normal' males and females.
I am very very interested to hear your thoughts and views.
The queering esol seminar series will culminate with a free weekend Conference on 19th & 20th June details of which can be found on this link https://queeringesol.wordpress.com/seminar-6/
Thank you
