[Scholarships in the School of English at Leeds - forwarded from Julia Snell]
The following may be of interest to potential PhD students within the broad field of English studies.
The Faculty of Arts at the University of Leeds proposes to offer up to 20 fully-funded three-year doctoral scholarships for PhD study commencing September 2015. The award will cover academic fees at the University of Leeds standard UK rate and a maintenance grant (£13,863 per annum in Session 2014/15) for full-time study, part-time will be pro-rata.
The School of English invites applications for up to 5 fully-funded doctoral scholarships to form a student cohort working under the broad research theme of Literature, Language, and Ethics. The cohort is open to applications from prospective PhD students working in any area of English studies, which at Leeds encompasses the study of literature, language, and theatre.
From its inception as an academic discipline in the 19th century through to present-day critical debates, English studies has been closely associated with questions of ethical value. Some of the research questions stimulated by this association might include:
* How far have the ethical concerns of English studies as a discipline changed as a result of the expansion of English as a global language and a medium of world literature?
* How might our own critical practices as scholars and researchers of English be conceived in ethical terms, whether through public engagement and impact, the value of cultural heritage and preservation, or in other ways?
* How far (and in what ways) does literary language have a particular capacity to express the moral and ethical concerns of the society in which it was produced, from the Medieval period to the contemporary world?
* What does it mean to speak of an ethics of writing/reading/performance within any of the various historical, cultural, and geographical contexts of English literature or language?
The School welcomes research proposals from prospective PhD students which engage with any aspect of the research theme Literature, Language, and Ethics broadly defined. It is not necessary for proposals to address the specific questions listed above which are offered only as possible approaches to the theme.
Outstanding scholars are encouraged to apply. They must meet the following criteria:
* These awards are only available to nationals from the UK and EU and are not open to applicants who are liable to pay academic fees at the international fee rate
* Applicants must have submitted a research degree application form and be in receipt of a student ID number
* Applicants must not have already been awarded, or be currently studying for, a doctoral degree
* Applicants must have achieved at least an upper second class honours degree at undergraduate level
* Candidates whose first language is not English must meet the University's English language requirements
