Suzanne Romaine's book 'Bilingualism' is a classic text on this, with quite a lot about children.

Subject: Seeking research on verbal skills in bilingual children
I'm trying to find research on bilingual children, in particular those born and/or raised/educated in the UK. I'm trying to find some references to issues such as English/L1 vocabulary knowledge and general verbal ability skills in such children. I'm not an expert in this area but from what I've heard over the years I understand that a bilingual/multilingual environment does not necessarily depress vocabulary skills, and can indeed benefit general cognitive functioning.
I've had a quick online search and have so far found the following, all of which look most interesting:
www.bilingualism-matters.ppls.ed.ac.uk
www.bbk.ac.uk/linguistics/research/centre-for-multilingual-and-multicultural-research-1/supporting-multilingual-and-multicultural-children-seminar-and-e-discussion
http://childandfamilyblog.com/bilingual-children
Any other suggestions would be most welcome.
Many thanks
