Thanks James.
If 'Developing Adult Teaching and Learning: Practitioner Guides - ESOL' is not available through NIACE I could make an earlier draft available to people who wish to read it. Please email me if this is the case.
V best,
Mel Cooke.

Dear Katrena, all
The best resource for action research with ESOL students is the work carried out by Melanie Cooke, Celia Roberts and colleagues, as a follow-up to the NRDC ESOL Effective Practice project.
Cooke, M. and C. Roberts. Developing Adult Teaching and Learning: Practitioner Guides - ESOL. London: NRDC and Leicester: NIACE.
Information about the ESOL Practitioner Guide is available on the NRDC website at http://www.nrdc.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=1339
The book itself is only available from NIACE - not sure if it's still actually available (maybe someone from NIACE can let us know).
There is an associated report by Cooke and Roberts about the process of doing Action Research with ESOL students: Reflection and Action in ESOL Classrooms. That is available to download for free online - and is highly recommended.
http://www.nrdc.org.uk/publications_details.asp?ID=112
For examples of action research initiatives funded through the Skills for Life policy via the NRDC go to: http://www.nrdc.org.uk/publications_details.asp?ID=94
These projects were all part of the Practitioner Led Research Initiative (PLRI).
Good luck with your own AR project. I hope others will have advice about the specific focus of your proposed work. And I also hope you manage to convene a helpful group of fellow practitioners.
Please let us know how you get on. Remember that one of the criteria for research (i.e. what makes research 'research') is that it is made public.
Cheers
James

Subject: A little help with action research
Hello fellow practitioners
I'm an ESOL Practitioner with the Workers Educational Association in the North East of Scotland. I teach Workplace ESOL to mainly fish factory workers. Using the Social Practice Approach I teach everyday English not just workplace based English. I do no teach using a specified curriculum. The learners choose topics they want to learn, with me fitting in the appropriate level of grammar where it occurs naturally. These evening classes are free and we recruit mainly via the factories themselves and the local community centre. My colleagues and I have noticed that since we have started these classes (4yrs ago) that we have many men register for our classes then one or two sessions later, they disappear! We have always had good female retention, with female learners often staying with us for 3 or 4 years. I'd like to do an action research project on 'How to retain adult male ESOL learners' and was wondering if anyone knew of any relevant literature I could have access to? I am no longer a student at Aberdeen Uni therefore have no access to academic articles etc.
Also, would anyone like to join me in a small or large peer group that I can bounce ideas off, reflect on my sessions and generally share the knowledge I gain from this experience?
