Praxis Language Gym Content Development
Expressions of Interest
Praxis Enterprise, Bethnal Green, London, is looking to build a team of suitably qualified and experienced English language specialists. The team will assist the development of learning content and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for a new and innovative English Language Service, the Praxis Language Gym (PLG).
The PLG is designed to provide the highest standard of language teaching and learning whilst taking full advantage of new developments in educational technology. Moving beyond classroom based provisions, the PLG use an IT based multiple delivery model (computer, DVD, Video, Mobile) that ensures self-directed, face-to-face and open access English language acquisition which responds to the differing learning needs and life conditions of a diverse community of learners: highly skilled migrant workers, low-medium skilled migrant communities, overseas students, people on family reunion and spouse visas and refugees. As such, the PLG adopts principles of blended learning combining the VLE with a virtual classroom (VC) as well as direct tutor/member interaction and group learning activities. The VLE will use the Blackboard platform including Blackboard Collaborate.
The Praxis Language Gym will enter into its pilot phase in January 2014 and go live in April 2014 and to this effect, the team will:
• develop the VLE in line with a dynamic pedagogical approach which blends interactive face-to-face and online learning with tailor-made learning material and constant feedback mechanisms
• build a matrix of appropriate learning activities which promote effective language learning
• ensure ease of navigation around the VLE
• identify and incorporate existing and relevant learning resources and web based materials
• where necessary prepare or recommend the commissioning of new materials
• ensure any usage complies with copyright and licensing requirements
• ensure materials are catalogued in accordance with commonly used reference frameworks, such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), Skills for Life and the Scottish ESOL framework
The team will work from late November 2013 to end March 2014 with the possibility of further work dependent upon future developments in the Language Gym.
Ideal candidates will have the following knowledge, qualifications and experience:
• Sound knowledge and understanding of the English language, for example through the achievement of the DELTA or equivalent qualification
• Recent, hands-on English language teaching experience with a wide range of students and levels
• Track record of advanced practice in ESOL materials development (desirable)
• Knowledge of language required in the workplace and the vocational training context
• Considerable knowledge and experience in web based and online English language teaching
• Knowledge of relevant sources
• Knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues

• Excellent teaching skills
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written
• Creativity
• Excellent IT skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including team working
• Drive, enthusiasm, resilience and ability to self-motivate
• Flexibility and ability to work to deadlines
Praxis recognizes that an individual may not meet all requirements
Ability to work within the timeframe allocating between 75-200 hours from December 2013 to March 2014. Praxis Enterprise expects to appoint team coordinator and team members as needed. Competitive payment on a part-time contract for the duration of the development phase starting December 2013.
