Is there an ESOL literacy test for those who are 'pre-A1 level', i.e. to show if someone knows the alphabet or can do any kind of functional reading?
Beyond the ESOL tests at Entry Level 1, I can only think of Heide Wrigley's test developed in the US some years ago for this purpose:
