I'd like to alert listservers to a project of interest: Simply Cracking Good
Stories. The project involves encouraging writers and non-writers to produce
short fiction books for immigrant adults whose oral proficiency is very low
and who are just beginning to read in a second language. The aim is to get
enough fabuluous books written so every programme for low-literate immigrant
adults can have a large enough fiction library to develop in emergent
readers the practice of reading for pleasure.
It's taken awhile, but we now have five books, in English (with a few more
coming soon), that meet our criteria for linguistically accessible and
engaging fiction. To order books and to find out how you - or those you
teach - can get involved in writing fiction books for us, visit the website:
