PhD Studentship at York St John University
"Developing awareness of English as a Lingua Franca in TESOL"
Dr Christopher J Hall, Prof Angela Goddard, and Rachel Wicaksono
Centre for Languages and Linguistics | Language and Identities in Interaction Research Group (LIdIA)
Applications are invited for a doctoral student to work on the applied linguistics of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF)-the use of English as a medium of communication between speakers of different languages. This is part of an ongoing project led by Christopher Hall and Rachel Wicaksono investigating the forms and functions of ELF and the ways in which the concept of ELF is understood (or not) by TESOL professionals, students, and language/education policy makers. A current strand of the project focuses on developing awareness of ELF in the UK and China higher education contexts, in conjunction with colleagues at the Suzhou University of Science and Technology. Another strand is more theoretical, using ELF data to question conventional definitions of, and beliefs about, English and other languages. A third strand explores the notion of understanding and misunderstanding in ELF discourse.
The studentship offers a new researcher the opportunity to join the project, contributing especially to the area of teacher awareness of ELF in TESOL contexts. The student would be expected to collect data to assess teachers' awareness of, and beliefs about, lingua franca varieties and uses of English in international higher education. The student might work on British and/or Asian TESOL contexts, including Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and/or English as a Medium of Instruction. The overall project is committed to developing both sound theoretical understandings of ELF and practical outcomes in the form of recommendations for awareness-raising and teacher education programmes.
The Language and Identities in Interaction (LIdIA) Research Group based at the Centre for Languages and Linguistics at York St John is a dynamic, interdisciplinary partnership between researchers and students. Members of LIdIA are interested in the many ways in which language and languages, and individual and group identities, interact in the construction and negotiation of socially-embedded meaning. We aim to foster a research culture that is productive, motivational, and challenging, but also informal and inclusive.
