1. Developing reading with entry level literacy learners
Tuesday 29 June 5.30-7.30pm Tutors: Irene Schwab and Sam Duncan
This session is aimed at adult literacy teachers who work with entry-level literacy learners
in any context and to ESOL teachers interested in the reading process. This interactive session will work from an overview of past and present beginner reading teaching and learning methods, explore phonic strategies and critically examine a contemporary framework for developing a holistic approach to reading.
2. EAL and ESOL - bridging the 14-19 divide
Thursday 1 July 5.30-7.30pm Tutor: David Mallows
This session is aimed at EAL/ESOL teachers who are interested in exploring what is distinctive and what is common about their work. It will look at the separate paths to professionalization of the EAL and ESOL workforces and ways in which descriptions of
the attributes, knowledge and professional skills of EAL and ESOL teachers overlap, with particular reference to the 'meeting point' of 14-19. The session will draw on recent research into the needs and makeup of the EAL and ESOL workforces and the experiences of participants.
3. Writing development
Monday 5 July 5.30-7.30pm Tutors: Nora Hughes and Vera Hutchinson
This session is aimed at adult literacy teachers working at any level of the core curriculum;
it will also be relevant to ESOL teachers interested in writing development. We will explore ways of working with learners to enhance their skills and confidence as writers, drawing on recent theory and research.
4. Exploring learner misconceptions in mathematics
Thursday 8 July 5.30-7.30pm Tutor: Jonathan Fletcher
