I have a question about Esol learners encountering "de-grammaticised"
language. E.g. tutors or other staff saying things like "you go class now",
missing out articles, prepositions etc. or simplifying verb forms in an attempt
to help the learner understand. This seems to occur especially if the learner is
perceived as having a low level of English ability, and/or if the learner
him/herself misses out such language features.
I recall a while ago reading about some research into this, which concluded
that there was no benefit of using such language forms with learners, and
that in fact it can be detrimental to learners to use such artificial utterances.
It concluded that learners are in fact better able to respond to natural speech
forms, and that articles, prepositions, inflected verb forms do not impede
comprehension.
Does anyone know of such research?
