Lambeth FE College are cutting their ESOL Literacy yet again. Last year our
only Entry 3 Literacy was cut. This year all E2 Literacy is to be cut,
despite the fact that this class had the longest waiting list last
September. We have been told if students cannot progress, they have to find
classes elsewhere, but having researched provision in the area last year I
know it is very limited, with little or no expertise in teaching ESOL with
Literacy. The recently published DEMOS report on language needs in London
states that students learning basic literacy in a language that is not their
mother tongue will need more intensive learning and additional funding. It
seems we are however going in the opposite direction, excluding further the
most marginalised. The scant provision currently available in Lambeth
outside the FE sector offers fewer hours, poorer facilities and less well
qualified teachers. I would be interested to know the experience of other
boroughs.
