James, your article is, I regret to say, highly accurate, especially your
account of the paperwork. Is there anyone who hasn't found themselves
teaching a substandard lesson because they were up all hours the night
before doing paperwork? Further, how many teachers have left or are leaving
because hourly pay does not cover the hours actually required and because,
compared to even a part-time a salaried position, one loses so much money
over a year?
The Skills for Life regime hasn't even made some of the changes it was
supposed to. I note that despite the imposition of training requirements on
people with experience and other qualifications, my local Adult Education
service still includes teachers and managers whose personal standard of
English appears to be substantially less than that supposedly required.
There doesn't appear to be much good quality CPD available at times, places
or prices that the hourly-paid can take advantage of, either, and there
certainly appears to be very little above the Cert Ed or equivalent level.

Subject: Literacies journal
Hello again
Issue 8 of the very fine Canadian journal 'Literacies' is now out.
Here is a link to the journal:
http://www.literacyjournal.ca/
and a link to Issue 8:
http://www.literacyjournal.ca/literacies/8-2008/readers_s08.htm
This issue contains an article by yrs truly, a critique of the teacher's lot
under 'Skills for Life' - aimed mainly at a Canadian audience, many of whom
bemoan the lack of central/national organisation for adult literacy and
ESOL.
Cheers
James
