The Right Course? Placement in Adult ESOL and Literacy classes

How do bilingual students get placed or place themselves in Skills for
Life ESOL or literacy classrooms? While colleges or centres in
multilingual cities and neighbourhoods may have well-developed adult
ESOL provision, their literacy classes can also show huge linguistic
diversity. Bilingual students might find themselves in either an ESOL or
a literacy class.
This presentation draws on findings from the recent NRDC Placement
Practices Project (now published as 'The Right Course?'). Through their
work in two very different colleges in London and the North of England,
the project team (James Simpson, Melanie Cooke and Mike Baynham) built
up an account of the experience of placement as seen through the eyes of
students, tutors, managers and student advisers.
The project paints a picture of the decisions taken at the time of
placement and enrolment and the reasons and beliefs underpinning those
decisions. These concern the boundaries and overlaps in Literacy and
ESOL, how the two areas are conceptualised by students, tutors and
managers, who they are assumed to be for, and what their teaching and
learning focus should be.
The study has implications for policy, training and practice, and poses
many questions about the relationship between Literacy and ESOL at Entry
Level 3 and beyond. It is particularly pertinent at a time of major
debate over the funding of ESOL. The presentation will be of interest to
any manager, tutor or trainer with an interest in the interface between
ESOL and literacy.
