Susan Noffke and Bridget Somekh have edited a new Handbook of Educational Action Research
and the invitation to the AERA session in New York on 26 March is open to all. A great opportunity
to raise issues, ask questions and extend our network of practitioner-researchers. Here is the note
for Susan and Bridget:
"Dear contributors to the Handbook of Educational Action Research:
We am very pleased to announce that there will be a session on the Handbook, sponsored by the
Action Research SIG of AERA, at the Annual Meeting next month in New York. If you are planning
to attend AERA, please do come to the session!
While the session LOOKS to be a presentation by only a few contributors, it is intended to be a
forum for all!
Structure of the Poster Session: After an initial overview of the structure of the book, four
chapters, one from each of the four major sections, will be briefly presented. The audience will
then be invited to discussions with groups of authors of the more than 40 chapters of the
handbook. A closing discussion will focus on comments related to the tensions and possibilities
for coalition-building to further advance the field of action research in education.
So please do come to the session, meet each other, and the members of the AERA Action Research
Special Interest Group! Please pass this information on to your co-authors!
Warmly,
Sue and Bridget

The Handbook of Educational Action Research: Creating a book and Building a Coalition
The purpose of this session is to examine the tensions and possibilities that have emerged in the
creation of the first Handbook of Educational Action Research. The need to recognize that both
the emergent character of action research and its diverse meanings has resulted in a book that
does not “inscribe” action research in stone, but rather provides an opportunity for new coalitions
to form. After an initial overview of the structure of the book, four chapters, one from each of the
four major sections, will be presented, and then audience will be invited to discussions with
groups of authors of the more than 40 chapters of the handbook."
Love Jack.
