Hi
Paul Meara would definitely be my recommendation for a lead also.
Try also the vocabulary element of the English section of Dialang
(http:\\www.dialang.org/intro.htm)for ideas.

Paul Meara at the University of Wales Bangor and his students do a lot
of work on vocabulary. It would be worth checking out his work.Ron
Carter? Paul Nation? These might give some leads.

Hello!
Cheryl must, I think, be referring to Heide Spruck Wrigley's literacy
assessment. The link is at:
http://www.literacywork.com/readingdemonstration
Cheryl is right - it's very good, but I don't know how much it will help
Louise, who is perhaps after something less holistic. Can you give us
any more details, Louise? Have you looked at the Entry 1 Skills for Life
tests? Perhaps something in these can be adapted. Any testers out there
might be able to help also.
Best wishes
James

I wish I could remember the reference. Via the internet, I once saw a
video (US or Canadian) of a woman assessing the literacy of a woman
whose first language was not English. She used a coke can and a fast
food container, and although the woman was technically illiterate, she
recognised quite a lot, including the words of the logos. (An
interpreter was present to make sure the subject understood the
questions and to help with responses, if necessary.) Unfortunately, I no
longer have a link to the video. It was very impressive and seemed like
a good idea, even though it was quite time-consuming.

Has anyone suggestions for assessing the vocabulary of students
with very basic literacy? We are about to start a small scale-research
project at Newcastle University into ESOL students acquiring literacy
for the first time and are looking for isuitable testing materials for
the vocabulary assessment .
