Frequently Asked Questions: the Great British Job Interview
King's College London, Weston Room, Maughan Library, Chancery Lane, London
WC2A 1LR
26th November 2007 5-7 pm
This DVD evolved from a research project, Talk on Trial: Job Interviews,
Language and Ethnicity by Celia Roberts and Sarah Campbell (DWP 2006) which
analysed the linguistic processes of real interviews in organisations such
as factories and mail companies. The research found that compared to UK born
candidates, those born abroad faced a 'linguistic penalty' produced by the
largely hidden demands to talk in institutionally credible ways and from a
mismatch of implicit cultural expectations.
The report has led to the production of two DVDs which take the findings out
to the wider community: the first, Successful at Selection (DWP) is intended
to raise the issues in the original research for people who frequently
interview candidates who were born abroad. The second, Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs) (funded by Jobcentre Plus Leicestershire/Northamptonshire
District with Deprived Area Fund (DAF) Provision) is for candidates
themselves, and those who teach them in colleges or training organisations.
At the launch we will briefly discuss the original research and show some of
the DVD FAQs, as well as celebrate with wine and snacks.
