Hi all
I've found use of the VLE for ESOL students an excellent way of
extending courses and adding flexibility - particularly for working
at mixed levels and for addressing those ILP horrors - There is
certainly a lot of scope online for learners and using computers and
Smartboards in the classroom is very liberating all round.
My only reservation in terms of language learning really is the issue
of pronunciation and intonation work -
It is easy enough to set up Speaking practice - and conferencing is
good for more confident students, but at the lower level too
intimidating -
- then there is the whole area of personal contact and isolation with
a lot of our students.
In the present political (financial?) climate we also need to take
care not to allow providers to think they can substitute online
learning with technician management for all ESOL provision.
