Hello all
I've just been sent this link (below) to an article in Focus on Basics,
the NSCALL magazine from the US. It's about how students stop coming to
lessons for a period of time. Though not in-depth in any way, it raises
some interesting questions which will probably be relevant to some on
the ESOL-Research list. Some of the points made chime in strongly with
our own experience on the ESOL Effective Practice Project, where we
found that students stopped attending for all sorts of different
reasons, many of them beyond the control of the tutor. Fluctuations in
attendance and moving from centre to centre might be viewed with dismay
by many tutors and managers, but may be perceived very differently by
students.

Stopping Out, Not Dropping Out:
Students and teachers may perceive withdrawing from a program
differently by Alisa Belzer http://www.ncsall.net/?id=417
This describes a study which followed learners until they dropped out
for a while and looked at their and the teachers perceptions of dropping
out.
