Tian Fengjun is the Director of China's Experimental Centre for Educational Action Research in
Foreign Languages Teaching. Moira Laidlaw is working as a consultant to the Centre as she moves
into her fifth year on Voluntary Service Overseas in China. Action Research Expeditions - an e-
journal hosted by the University of Montana in the US has just published their paper:
How can we enhance educational and English-Language provision at our Action Research Centre
and beyond?
at

I think this paper is of particular value for the review phase of our seminar because Tian Fengjun
and Moira Laidlaw demonstrate an understanding of the standards of judgement and educational
theories they are generating and using to account to themselves and others for their practitioner-
researcher. Some 2,500 years ago the Greeks carved above their temples 'Know Thyself'. These
two educators, from very different cultures, show how they are helping each other to do just that
as they explore their educational influence together. The quality of their collaboration carries to
me their life-affirming energy with their hope for the future of humanity. They expressed this
energy and hope in a seminar last night at the University of Bath and I think you will feel both of
these qualities flowing through their paper.
One of the innovations I like in Action Research Expeditions is the 'Discuss this paper' Forum and
I'm looking forward to sharing responses to the paper in this forum as well as our own.
Love Jack.
