Can anyone advise on our 'Lost Alumni' dilemma outlined below please?
We have some 8,000 -10,000 Alumni (former students) with whom we have lost
touch and would like to get back in contact with.
Whilst some UK Universities have no 'Lost Alumni' section on their Alumni
websites, many others do, and these generally feature a list of either:
a) Grad Year - Full Name (inc Maiden Name if known) - Course OR
b) Grad Year - Full Name (inc Maiden Name) but not the course
And most of these are accessible via a general area, as opposed to via a
password protected part of their website.
This has been debated on the development/alumni officers development forum
with some arguing that name only (no course or grad year) is the only
acceptable option whilst at the other end of the scale, others say that
unless you are uniquely identifying a living individual then there is
nothing wrong with saying we have 'missing' people, and that publishing the
name of someone, including their grad year and subject does not usually
uniquely identify someone.
For those Universities who have taken either option a) or b) route above
they say that having a 'Lost Alumni' list on their website or publishing it
in their magazine has helped to locate a proportion of missing alumni.
Our alumni officer would like to pursue this but I would like to have
clarification of the position from other DP officers/experts.
Thanks in anticipation.
