I know that there was a discussion on petitions at the beginning of last
year but the results were inconclusive.
If I sign a petition, am I effectively putting my details into the public
domain? Last year someone said that the legal status of petition was that
they were public documents but it was unclear whether this was fact or just
speculation. Does anyone have any authoritative information on this?
Petitions generally are made to a public body and are seeking some specific
action. Once this public body has the details of the petitioners, what can
it do with this data? If I signed a petition then my expectation would be
that it was not private but I would only expect my data to be used by the
public body for the purposes of the action that I am supporting or
protesting about. I would not expect my data to be used for any other
purpose or passed to any other person or organisation.
Lots of the arguments here hang on the legal status of petitions.
