I have had a SAR from someone requesting their PhD pre viva reports from
two external examiners.
There is an official form issued with PhD theses which our external
examiners complete and, on this form, we have a sentence to the effect that
the student will be able to see these comments. However, the pre viva
reports from examiners do not contain such a sentence.
The pre viva forms are in the student's file and I think s/he should be
granted access.
Do list members agree?
Should we seek the consent of the external examiners prior to release? If
they refuse consent, can we do anything about this?
Should we add a sentence to the pre viva reports in future, saying that
students may ask to see the comments?
I'd like to hear what other HEIs do about such reports.
Hope this email is understandable - apologies if not, blame it on the heat
in sunny Newcastle.
