In the USA you can simply go round to the County Courthouse and look up
who owns a house and how much they paid. Perhaps this is partly because
the property tax is like our old rates, but based on the value of the
house.
When you are buying a house, and negotiating the deal, it can be very
handy to have this information, especially if the previous owner hasn't
been there that long. They often don't appreciate having their "profit
margin" so easily exposed, which is quite easy to do as their market has
much stabler prices than over here, typically varying between +/- 5%
inflation a year depending on area, and economic conditions.
