As a fellow JISC-funded service, perhaps I could extol the virtues of
JISCmail (free, for the academic community) or Mailtalk (at a very
reasonable cost, for anyone else)? I believe both JISCmail
(www.jiscmail.ac.uk) and Mailtalk (www.mailtalk.ac.uk) have software
which tracks bounced posts, and cleans up the list, though please check
that out for yourself before migrating over!
I'm sure there are other systems that also offer similar.
Cheers,
Jason Campbell

Subject: [data-protection] Maintaining e-mail distribution lists
Dear All,
I have had an e-mail from one of our offices today describing the
problems they are having with the volume of "bounce-backs" they receive
when sending out a monthly e-zine newsletter. With my DP hat on, I have
not been able to condone the option of not maintaining their e-mail
distribution list to exclude e-mail addresses which have "bounced-back",
but can sympathise with the fact that the office concerned cannot afford
the amount of time and effort it is taking to do so manually. Not being
on the "front line" myself, I was wondering if those of you who do
manage e-zines and their distribution lists can offer some cheap and
cheerful solutions to the problem (with the emphasis on "cheap"
obviously, bearing in mind that we are "public sector" poor cousins with
limited resources!)
