This discussion is extremely interesting to this American. Our schools, especially (but not exclusively) outside cities, as a tradition and matter of course publish lists of their students together with their parents' names, addresses and telephone numbers and distribute them each year in the Fall to all parents. This is true of both public and private schools. This helps parents understand who their kids are talking about, arrange play dates, sports events, car-pooling, homework emergencies, meet new people (especially parents of boys dating their daughters!), etc. etc., in short, it is acknowledged to be an important tool in building the community. But, having said that, I would expect if people had the right to object to this, or were asked their permission, the system would collapse.

I had a similar query Tim - parents were moving from the area and wanted the
name and/or address of every single child who attended the school (country
school) as they were going to have a big party in the village hall.
We told them to put a poster up in the school and if anyone wanted to attend
it would be their choice - consent etc.
School is not there to provide services such a providing names and addresses
of children to parents or even names of children. Xmas cards though - a bit
different....they could always send one big card and pin it up on notice
board....

***** THIS EMAIL WAS RECEIVED FROM THE INTERNET *****
My wife works in a school, in the nursery class.
"Please may I have a list of the children's names," said a parent.
"I want
to send all the children a Christmas Card."
A teacher said "yes", and prepared a list to hand out. But "Child's
forename, Nursery, Floggings Primary School" is sufficient to
identify a
living individual. Not uniquely in the case of a John, but in the
case of
the names in this class, trust me, it's unique!
So, may the list be handed out? No permissions of any description
have ever
been gathered for this purpose.
(The School name WAS "Bloggins" but M$ Spilling chucker suggesting
"Floggings". Cute or what?)
