If the wallchart contained details of the illness then I would see it as a
definite no-no. If it simply says "sick" then I find it harder to justify an
objection. After all, if I'm off sick I expect (hope?) my colleagues would
notice! That inevitably leads them to ask "Where's Stuart today?" and so
they will find out exactly as much information as they would from a coloured
strip on a wallchart.
Furthermore in most offices I imagine that when somebody is off sick then
their colleagues are informed simply so that they can deal with calls,
queries, etc. coming in for the absent person.
If you ban the wallchart then I would see that a logical extension is that a
person phoning in sick would only tell their manager or personnel (who would
update each other) and then their colleagues, callers, etc. would be met by
a stony-faced silence as to that person's whereabouts.
