Strip shredding is literally that. The shredded paper is cut into long
strips that may be relatively easily joined together by a diligent person.
Crosscut shredding cuts across those strips at intervals, producing
confetti.
The narrower the strip, the greater the frequency of the cross cut the
greater the security.
Some shredders cut "microfine". Often we call these "laser printers" and
curse the manufacturer.

Subject: Disposal of Records
A member of the list recently gave the Public Record Office as a site that
has a Records Management Standard 'Disposal Scheduling' which includes the
physical destruction of records.
It recommends that 'Restricted Records' should be strip-shredded. For
'Confidential Waste' it recommends crosscut-shredded and also collection by
approved disposal firm and pulped or burnt.
Principle 7 - A cost benefit analysis to find the best security for the
best price would appear to be appropriate; staff training; contractual
security measures with outside companies.
I wonder what procedures other organisations have in place? Do they shred
records followed by pulping or burning? Can anyone explain what is
strip-shredded and crosscut-shredded? Is there another standard that covers
this area?
Any assistance is appreciated,
Sue
