Frankly the right to express bigotry has been often removed by law. Race
relations is a case in point.
Your flippancy is ill becoming over your throw away lines regarding "Dear
Sir or Madam". The original context was designed to be humorous, was it
not? In the context of your apparently being unsure about the gender of the
person on your records. I think your statement below simply adds to the
original. At best poor taste and an error of judgement.
I would now feel nervous of asking you to alter my record in any way.
Whatever I change I perceive that you will laugh at it behind my back. I am
pleased you hold no data of any sort on me with the exception of these
emails.
There is a very serious point to this. A legitimate question has led to
schoolyard humour and to bias being expressed. And WE are meant to be the
leading lights in data privacy.

People have a right to hold views and to express them.
I'm sorry, but the term 'Dear Sir or Madam' is a commonly used term. It you
perceive it as 'flippant' then you have put your own spin on it.
I wonder how many people stop to consider just how offensive the term 'Dear
Madam' can be to a female in who's mind a 'madam' runs a brothel.
