I have received a request for help from one of our ex-regulars, Mona
Lisa-Cooke, who some of you may remember was DO at
Loghborough University until a while ago. I'm afraid the timescale is
almost impossibly short unless you know a few students who
might be free tomorrow and would enjoy taking part.
I'll simply copy her letter, and the attachment, as one email
message.

User test of Cityspace Public Access Terminal prototype
Participant Information sheet
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide
whether or not to take part it is important for you to understand why the
research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read
the following information carefully. Ask us if there is anything that is
not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide
whether or not you wish to take part.
What is the purpose of this study?
A new concept in providing public information is computer like screen
terminals located in the `High Street’. Some will be found at bus stops,
outside shops or public buildings and as free standing information
points in town squares or on street corners. The purpose of these
terminals is to provide information and certain facilities that the general
public might need. This could include information such as town maps,
‘what’s on’ information, Local Authority information etc. They may also
provide facilities for buying ‘on line’ using a credit card reader or provide
the facility of re-charging a mobile ‘phone.
The manufacturer would like to test some design principles with disabled
and non-disabled user to test whether factors such as the height of the
terminal, the angle of the screen and the location of various other
features are correct.
The purpose of this study is therefore is to check such factors by
carrying out a series of tasks eg viewing and reaching to the screen and
getting some user opinions on the ease and comfort in use. The
information will be studied and recommendations produced so that any
changes in the design that are considered necessary will be made.
