Actually, I have just moved and when I registered my move with BT the
operator offered unprompted for me to register with the TPS.
I have had a letter this morning from the TPS.
One paragraph states:
"Your TPS registration will not stop calls from companies involved in market
research and other activities _not_ related to selling. To stop these calls,
you will have to advise each company individually when they contact you that
you do not wish to be contacted by them by telephone in future".
Speaking personally I used to get many calls for mobile phone companies but
very few from market researchers.
A true market researcher will tell you at the outset how long their
questionnaire is going to be and give you the opportunity to decline to
participate - not the hallmark of telephone sales.
I might point out that recently when my father was talking to my
brother-in-law about telephone sales my brother-in-law pointed out that my
father shouldn't be too hard on them because quite possibly my nephews when
_students_ might be doing that sort of job in the not-so-distant future.

Indeed.
I'm not even sure that this is a DPA issue. TPS, as I see it, has a
slightly wider remit. From the web site:
"The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your
telephone number is no longer available to organisations ... who may
telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive"
The offer of being involved in market research perhaps?

I am sure this will spark some debate...
