I had a similar experience a year or so ago, but the hard disk was in a
desktop machine. The disk was in warranty, but I took the decision to go and
buy a replacement disk (they are not prohibitively expensive, fortunately)
and keep the old one.
I then got a large lump hammer and smashed the disk. Following that, I put
the disk fragments in direct flame to red-hot. Job done.
I have however, since found out that a local recycling company will degauss
the disk to a specified standard for a nominal fee, and dispose of, if
required.

I think it's reasonable to have missed this so far! I had never experienced
disk failure within warranty on a business machine before. But when I hit
it, boy did it hit me!
