There does tend to be a difference between the House of Lords (bunch of
amateurs) and the Law Lords who inhabit a small corner of it, though

But is it? Good, I mean. The problem with the Lords, as well we know, is
that it is political in itself and its politics are somewhat misguided. The
Lords are also a law unto themselves and should be abolished at the earliest
opportunity - wasn't that also a New Labour pledge or is my memory playing
tricks?
Politics in its true form reflects the will of the people - or at least a
majority of the people - it should not reflect the will of a powerful
pressure group. In this case the group is government itself. The Lords
were always of the opinion that a narrow definition of personal data and a
very restricted access to manual files were essential in the DPA - we only
have to look at the discussions they had during the Bill's progress.
Let us hope that European politics - which in itself attempts to shift the
balance of power between people and governments - has a hand in sorting this
out.
In the meantime, two cheers for democracy!
