In my institution the Registry maintain the statistics and up until this year if a student came to me with needs during the course and they had not declared a disability when they registerd I would arrange for the statistics to be altered, this meant I had a fairly accurate number to work from.
This year with HESA adding in the additional field to monitor the take-up of the DSA or the SDA as they call it is giving me headaches. The students either do not understand the SDA is the DSA or as far as they are concerned they are not receiving it anyway as they are only in the first week or 2 of term when they register. I started sending Registry a list of the students who had received a DSA but they will not change the database unless the student gives them permission, as you can imagine students will not take themselves off to the Registry just to ensure our stats are up to date.
I know I could introduce a form for the students to sign when they are seeing me over their DSA's but it is just another job on the list.
Any comments, how do you all manage with field 15 for HESA or do all your stats to HESA show you have very few students claiming a DSA.
