Hi All
LD Definitions & LD Assessment is such a key issue that I feel the need to
keep writing at this busy time of year - Hope you all have the time to keep
reading.
This very same issue is being wrestled with in Australia at the moment.
The bottom line is that government departments in general, learning
institutions included, require confirmation of any medical condition or
disability before they will make concessions/accommodations available. This
also applies to LD and as such, formal assessment by Educational
Psychologists is necessary. Cost $$$$$ becomes involved.
To overcome the cost factor (Until we, the people, get the Federal
Government to take responsibility) here at the Uni of Tas, we set up a
procedure 2 years ago whereby Post Graduate Psychology students do our LD
Assessments during their Prac placements. Senior Psychology academic staff
(Australian Registered Psychologists) supervise these students and sign the
final reports, which are accepted by Uni of Tas academic staff and the
Examination Office and Centrelink (Department of Social Security),
including Austudy. This procedure, which is COST $$$$ FREE, has been
refined and continues to function very well.
Whilst the Uni of Tas model may not be available/achievable in all learning
institutions, it is an example of what can be achieved with some lateral
thinking. Please feel free to contact me re any further details.
