DATE 11 October 1999
FROM Dr Paula B Dobrowolski, Welfare Officer for Students with Special Needs
TO All Midland Members of the SKILL Special Needs in HE Group
Re Meeting at UCE : 2pm on Tuesday 16 November 1999
Dear All
The next meeting of the SKILL Special Needs in HE : Midlands Group
will take place on 16 November at UCE. Full details are on the Agenda
and a map is also enclosed. Tea/coffee/water and so on will be
available from 1.30pm onwards. Please feel free to bring your
sandwiches along!
The main discussion of the afternoon will be focused on the Singleton
Report. I asked Mike to outline his thoughts:
At the last Skill Regional meeting in June it was suggested by
colleagues that they would welcome an opportunity to discuss/debate
the National Dyslexia Working Party Report and the impact that it
has had on practice within individual institutions. As a way of
structuring the discussion I propose the questions detailed on the
agenda.
Notes from the session will then be circulated to all members of the
group. In addition a copy will be sent to the HEFCE to feed into
any future developments in this area.
I would really encourage you to come to the session prepared to talk
about experiences within your own institution.
This outline is not meant to restrict the debate in any way - if there
are other issues concerning the report that you want to discuss that
will be excellent.
Please let me know if you will be coming to the meeting by 26 October
by phone or fax as detailed on the letterhead or by e-mail :

Best wishes
Paula

II Discussion on the Report of the National Working Party on Dyslexia
chaired by Mike Adams, Coventry University and eQuip Team. The
following is a suggestion as to how the discussion might be
structured:
General Points
1) How useful have people found the report:
a) As a summary of best practice.
b) As a tool for instigating change within your own institution.
c) As a way of gaining support and additional resources from senior
management (what strategies did you employ)?
Specific Points
1) Is anyone using the criteria for 'mild, 'moderate' and 'severe'
dyslexia? If so, how is it working?
2) In terms of headings (chapters 6-12) what recommendations have you
implemented? What hadn't worked? Why?
3) What strategies have those institutions who are near to meeting all
the recommendations employed? In what ways have institutions
developed policy and practice beyond the scope of the report?
4) To what extent do people feel the report is a reflection of their
own views (bearing in mind that some of you will have contributed to
the original consultation process)?
